Golf News, Source, GolfStuffReview.com.- Mexico (Dec. 4, 2005) - The 48th Abierto Mexicano de Golf Corona's trophy stayed home thank to a valiant effort by local star Antonio Maldonado, winner of the 2005 Mexican Tour Ranking. The 38-year old man shot 67 in the final round for a total of 9-under par 275 and one stroke victory over Argentina's Rafael Gomez and France's Mickael Dieu.
Mexico's Octavio Gonzalez, tied with Dieu for the lead at the beginning of the day, played poorly at the start. However, he was able to sink a spectacular 50-feet putt for birdie at the final hole to take the solo fourth spot.
"I'm very happy because this is a very important win for me. I used to dream about winning this event someday, and now that dream has turned into a reality," said Maldonado, a very quiet man that shows little emotion even after winning an event of this caliber.
This victory at the Tour de las Americas (TLA) – European Challenge Tour (ECT) co-sanctioned event reported US $48,800 in earnings for the Mexican, who announced he intends to make the most of his 12-month exemption to play the 2006 ECT.
